In which we scour the transcript of the State Department's daily presser so you don't have to. Here are the highlights of today's briefing by Department Spokesman Ian Kelly:
Before the new leader assumes power it might be a good time to review the agency's core-mission. The term 'development' has become a controversial one in many circles with it's aroma of neo-colonialism, corruption and incompetence. Having worked in and around USAID for several years I would say it does a reasonably good job with limited resources but it could be much more of a significant player if it:
1. had it's own in-house policy and think-tank regarding what works in development
2.did more of it's own project management and stopped it's almost complete reliance on a small handful of beltway-bandits
(you know who you are!)
3.became an independent agency apart from the State Department...with it's head being a full cabinet member
4. did a better job of lobbying the American people on why development is morally right and politically necessary
America is relatively stingy compared to many other countries when it comes to foreign aid (unless we invade you of course (-: ) But that's no reason why we still can't have the smartest, most competent (if not most generous) aid agency around...President Obama! please make it so!
