U.S. Afghan, Europe, Southern commanders confirmed

This afternoon, the Senate voted to confirm the nominations of:

  • Adm. James G. Stavridis, USN for reappointment to the grade of admiral and to be Commander, U.S. European Command and Supreme Allied Commander, Europe;
  • Lt. General Douglas M. Fraser, USAF to be general and Commander, U.S. Southern Command; and
  • Lt. Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, USA to be general and Commander, International Security Assistance Force and Commander, U.S. Forces, Afghanistan.

The nominations, which were voted out of the Senate Armed Services Committee yesterday, were approved en bloc by unanimous consent, a committee spokesman said in a statement.
