As The Cable previously reported, the man selected to be deputy secretary of defense is William J. Lynn, the department's former comptroller, signaling an effort -- or at least a hope -- to get control of Pentagon spending. The following top appointments were announced today:

  • William J. Lynn, deputy secretary of defense
  • Robert F. Hale, under secretary of defense (comptroller)
  • Michèle Flournoy, under secretary of defense (policy)
  • Jeh Charles Johnson, general counsel
My colleague Carolyn O'Hara, who used to work for Johnson, says he is a "great pick."
